Co-founders Joy Roberts and Julie Widman were raising their children when they noticed a growing crisis. By 2012, half the population was using smartphones, which led to the emergence of the most socially disconnected generation in history. As social connections crumbled, loneliness became an epidemic, resulting in increased levels of anxiety, depression, self-harm, and even harm to others. From 2016 to 2023, diagnosed anxiety increased 61 percent (from 10.0% to 16.1%) and depression increased 45 percent (from 5.8% to 8.4%) in youth ages 12-17.
Joy and Julie began to explore how they could help this generation become better friends. In their research, they uncovered extensive data highlighting the importance of teaching social and emotional character development in schools.
This exploration ultimately led to the creation of Friendzy, driven by a desire to help young people develop relationship skills that would benefit them for a lifetime
Friendzy combines research and proven strategies to create an evidence-supported framework. Students learn character skills, tailored to their school grade level. Through engaging activities, discussions, and reflections, the Friendzy curriculum helps increase resilience, improve relationships, and generate overall well-being.
Teachers and parents frequently report fewer behavioral issues both in the classroom and at home, as kids become better at handling their emotions and relating to their peers and adults.
Friendzy offers flexible programming for both public and faith-based schools, provided in both English and Spanish. We back our programs with expertise in whole-child development, as well as a positive, responsive support staff. Finally, we can help with funding advice and resources.
