Week 3: Coloring Page & Conversation Activity
This activity is designed to create space for intentional conversation around our diverse emotions. Instead of trying to avoid our emotions, we can feel them, recognize and name them, and then find a strategy to deal with them.
SHARE & PRACTICE THE CATCHPHRASE /// A catchphrase is a concept kids can easily remember. It helps them catch onto a big idea to impact the way they think and act positively, and then they can toss it out for others to catch onto too!
OUR FRIENDZY CATCHPHRASE /// Feel to Deal
Our emotions can be all over the place sometimes. Emotions are complicated.
START COLORING /// Print out these coloring cards for your child to color and decorate it. Invite students to hang in their spaces as a reminder to put it into practice or share it with others.
LISTEN TO MUSIC WHILE COLOR /// Listening to music has many positive benefits that have been scientifically supported. These benefits include reducing stress, improving your mood, and strengthening learning.
COLORING CONVERSATION /// On top of the mood-boosting and stress-relieving benefits of music, the right song can also help stimulate emotions. Use some of the questions below as conversation starters for connecting to our emotions through music.
DO YOU SPEND TIME THINKING ABOUT HOW YOU ARE FEELING? WHY OR WHY NOT?
WHY ARE OUR EMOTIONS (HOW WE ARE FEELING) IMPORTANT?
DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU MANAGE YOUR EMOTIONS OR DO THEY MANAGE YOU? EXPLAIN…
DID LISTENING TO MUSIC WHILE YOU COLORED HELP YOU FOCUS?
AFTER COLORING/LISTENING TO MUSIC, DO YOU FEEL MORE CALM? HAPPY? LESS STRESSED? IF SO, WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IS?
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE SONGS AND HOW DO THEY MAKE YOU FEEL WHEN YOU LISTEN?
WHAT IS A LYRIC OF A FAVORITE SONG THAT YOU CONNECT WITH? WHY?
WHEN YOU HAVE A BAD DAY, WHAT IS A SONG THAT YOU COULD PLAY TO HELP YOU FEEL BETTER?
CONNECTION OPPORTUNITY /// Consider playing a variety of family favorite songs and having your student choose an emotion from the Friendzy Emotions Chart that matches the song best.
COLORING CAN LOWER OUR STRESS LEVELS /// When we draw and color, our brains actually relax. Psychologist Gloria Martinez Ayala noticed that when we color we activate both sides of our brain hemispheres. This type of dual brain function is a great way to manage stress. Ayala also clarified that the process of coloring incorporates the areas of the cerebral cortex involved in vision and fine motor skills. The brain “relaxation” that it provides lowers the activity of the amygdala, a basic part of our brain involved in controlling emotion that is affected by stress. Our bodies benefit from coloring and drawing.
